Linda’s Letter

Dear parents,

May 9 is our last All-School Meeting of the year. It is super important that everyone come. Among other topics I want to clarify the very nuanced and complicated issues of attendance and Independent Study. I know that there are some misunderstandings about these issues, that some people are concerned about the school being black and white or rigid. I apologize profusely for giving that impression. I really want to address these concerns, put people’s minds at ease, and also help us to work together to find the best path as a community. So please come, get the full picture and lend your voice. Our school is about whole child and whole families and we always have the best outcomes when we work together as a team.

This Saturday April 16 is the last work day for Sprinkler installation in the field inside of our track.
Please come out and lend your support for either the morning or the afternoon shift! Many hands make light work. When we finish the sprinklers, the track will stay beautiful! It will be so wonderful to have it done for the Walkathon! Please email invites to your friends at Green Acres, Ocean Alternative, and on the Little League team!

This week was incredibly exciting. The 4/5/6 classes used our brand-new tents on a camping trip in the Pinnacles; The Oaks, Suns and Hearts traveled to Natural Bridges, Seymour Center and Quail Hollow ranch; The Spots played secret angel in each of the empty classrooms, writing sweet affirming notes for younger children, leaving piles of balloons and generally showing their affection for the younger kids.

Tierra Pacifica/Green Acres Walkathon and Market Day
Next Friday! April 22


11:00am–12:00pm – Walkthon. Students from both schools join forces getting healthy, while raising money for play yard improvements. DJ Mr. Trinh-Halperin will be on hand to get the party started with some rocking tunes. Last year’s funds paid for resurfacing and repainting the basketball courts. This year’s project is still being selected, some possibilities are painting basketball court lines, new basketball hoops, new piece of playground equipment or "buddy benches" for kids to sit on when they are looking for a buddy to play with. Students are encouraged to get pledge signatures/donations for walking/running laps. Pledge forms were distributed to each class today. Yellow Walkathon pledge forms are also available in the office. Turn in your forms and money in the office on the day of the event.

12:30pm–1:15pm – Market Day. Any student can be a vendor on this Market Day. The only restriction is that power hook ups have already been assigned to specific students and will not be available to any other students. If you are planning to sell food you will need a food permit. If you completed a food permit for a previous market day, you may bring your old permit instead of getting a new one.

We still need elective instructors for our last session of the year! Electives only happen because of our family volunteers. Each class runs from 11:00am - 12:10pm on the following Fridays: April 29, May 6, 13, and 20. Don’t forget that time spent on electives prep and teaching earns you triple parent participation hours!  We will also reimburse instructors up to $25 in expenses per elective.

Development Corner

The TPCS lottery for new students happened before break and new families are stopping by the school to confirm their spot for next year. These families are so excited to be part of the TPCS community.  They have heard good things about the teachers and the programs and all that has been accomplished by parents working together here. It is fun to see so many people jazzed about being a part of the school. These new families are invited to the May 9th All-School meeting.  Please introduce yourself and share with them what you like about the school.  Thanks to the families who will be “buddies” to these new families and help in making them feel welcome.

Parent Pledges. It is never too late to pledge! Thanks to all of the TPCS families who have pledged for the 2015-2016 school year. Pledges pay for Teacher’s Aides, music, art, counselors, PE Teacher, additional math and language arts instruction. If you have not pledged and are now in a position to pledge at any level or you can pledge more, please contact Satisha or me. We can email you a pledge form and pledge forms can be found in the office as well.  You can also make a one time donation. All pledge donations are needed and appreciated.  Thank you for your commitment to TPCS!

Fund Development Team. Interested in helping with outreach to help our school be well-resourced and thriving? Join the Fund Development Team!  We have a dynamic volunteer team of parents, grandparents and friends who plan and coordinate fundraising projects and events, and connect people with gifts, time and talents.  Contact Bengie at tpcsfunddevelopment@gmail.com or 462-9404 ext 4 for more information if you are interested.  I am happy to meet you on campus or elsewhere to talk about our work and answer your questions.  New volunteers are ALWAYS welcomed and needed. We currently only meet once a month or less.

Navigating the School Years with Positive Discipline, 5-12 year olds
What: This 8 week series helps parents with school age children learn new ways to understand their children’s behavior, how to set limits with kindness and firmness, and ways to encourage their children to cooperate and become more capable.
When: Tuesdays, April 12 through May 31, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm
Where: Live Oak Community Resources, 1740 17th Avenue
Who: Colleen Murphy, Certified Positive Discipline Trainer, ECE co-op teacher with over 16 years of ECE teaching experience both with children and as a parent educator
Cost: $80 per person for the 8 week series

Parent Support Group: For Parents of Teens
What: This is a monthly meeting where parents of teenagers can share their challenges, concerns, problem solve together, and find support. The is group open to parents of teens all throughout Santa Cruz County. These groups are based on the principals of Positive Discipline but will be led in a support group format versus an instructional class series.
When: Last Wednesday of every month, from 6:30 – 8:00pm
Where: Meetings are held at the Branciforte Small Schools Campus, 840 N. Branciforte Ave, Santa Cruz
Who: Meetings are facilitated by Stephanie Tam Rosas who is a Certified Positive Discipline Parent and Teacher Educator.
